Taken by Chris Cuffaro, this photo of Perry Farrell is believed to have inspired Chris Cornell to write Jesus Christ Pose.
You just see it a lot with really beautiful people, or famous people, exploiting that symbol as to imply that they’re either a deity or persecuted somehow by their public. So it’s pretty much a song that is nonreligious but expressing being irritated by seeing that. It’s not that I would ever be offended by what someone would do with that symbol. - Chris Cornell, Spin 1992
In 1991 Cuffaro made a promo card out of this photo and mailed it to everyone he knew. One of the people to receive the card was Susan Silver, manager of Soundgarden and Chris Cornell’s wife at the time. Chris saw it and wrote the song about this image of Perry starring at you in his Jesus Christ Pose.
